BEKKO ATTRACTIVENESS

Bekkō
The Timeless Allure of Its Material

Bekko, or tortoiseshell, is a natural material derived from the shell of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).
Its distinctive, softly diffused luster reflects light with a warmth that evokes the quiet beauty of nature each time you hold it in your hands.
Strong yet gently pliant, it allows for intricate handcrafting. This quality has made it a cherished material for centuries, used in traditional Japanese combs, hair ornaments, and other refined crafts.

The smooth, almost velvety feel against the skin comes from the fact that bekko shares the same protein composition as human nails and skin.
Despite its dense appearance, it is remarkably lightweight, offering natural comfort that endures even with prolonged wear.
With proper care, maintenance, and occasional repair, bekko develops a deeper sheen and richer tone over time. Its beauty lasts for decades, lovingly passed down from one generation to the next.

Today, as new imports are restricted under the Washington Convention (CITES),
the remaining stock preserved within Japan is treated with the utmost respect. It is crafted with care, inherited with reverence, and sustained as part of the country’s living tradition.
